Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar announces that 118 new Community Radio Stations to be set up across the country. The approved list of applicants has already granted for setting up CRS. It is expected that these Radio Stations will become operational within six months.

The areas included for CRS are 16 from Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected districts, six from most LWE affected districts, 17 from Aspirational Districts, 25 from coastal districts, three from North-East and two from Jammu and Kashmir

Applications from NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations), Educational Institutions (both private and public), and Krishi Vigyan Kendras have been granted approvals

Community radios are small (low power) FM radio stations with a coverage area of about 10-15 km radius depending on the geographic location of the area. These stations play a significant role in the dissemination of agriculture-related information, government schemes for people, weather forecast among others

The aim is to ensure the expansion of community radio network to each district of the country
